What is Wunden?

Wunden is a personalised signet ring by Andrew Geoghegan, handmade in Britain as the second piece in the Treowth series. Twisted silver profiles flow seamlessly into a cushion-shaped signet, the canvas for a hand-engraved Rune, initials, or left blank. A hidden gemstone chosen by the wearer adds another element of personalisation and intrigue. Wunden is a modern signet built around personal meaning.

Designed for men and women, Wunden is offered in two proportions so the wearer can choose by scale, presence and feel, not by category.

The word is Old English for twisted, for interwoven, and was mentioned in the original Beowulf text. Anglo-Saxon metalsmiths used the word for rope, for torque, and for the sword-knot wound tight around a warrior's wrist. The structure came first. Its decorative force followed.

Andrew built Wunden from that principle. Look at it and the twisting elements are in motion, twisting around each other and seemingly moving in opposite directions. They spiral up seamlessly into the signet face, arriving somewhere completely still. A flat cushion-shaped surface. Blank until you decide what goes on it. The band carries all that energy and delivers you somewhere quiet.

Why Wunden begins in silver

Wunden can be made in gold or platinum, but begins in 925 silver, a metal absent from Andrew's workshop for nearly twenty years.

Silver gives the ring the weight, depth and sculptural presence the design demands, while opening the first release to more AG clients. It is not a compromise. It is central to Wunden's character.

How do you personalise a Wunden signet ring?

Every piece in the Treowth series carries the story of a discovery. An Anglo-Saxon goldsmith worked this piece of gold over a thousand years ago. Andrew uncovered it. That is where the Treowth story begins.

A Wunden signet is personalised in two ways: the visible mark on the signet face, and the hidden stone set beneath the signet, known only to you.

Choose what features on your signet: a hand-engraved Wunden rune, two hand-engraved initials, or a blank face. Initials can be engraved in a classic style or as a monogram. If you wish, add a hidden precious stone beneath the ring.

The Inspiration

Inspired by Anglo-Saxon gold, unearthed after 1,500 years

Andrew and his son Arthur found a piece of Anglo-Saxon gold during a metal detecting trip in Lincolnshire. Andrew believes it may be the chape of a dagger scabbard. Its twisted wire and granulation became the direct inspiration for Wunden.

The object was gold, in extraordinary condition, and decorated with extraordinary care. What struck Andrew was not only its potential function, but the skill of the goldsmith who worked it more than a thousand years ago.

The piece is currently with the Finds Liaison Officer under the Treasure Act. It may one day enter a museum collection. In the meantime, it started something. Goldwin was the first piece the find inspired. Wunden is the second. An Anglo-Saxon craftsman and a British jeweller, centuries apart. The principle in the wire is the same.

Andrew and his son Arthur unearthed a piece of Anglo-Saxon gold while metal detecting in Lincolnshire. Possibly part of a dagger scabbard, its twisted wire and granulation inspired the Treowth series.

Wunden's proportions were resolved over months of design development. Once cast, each ring is independently hallmarked. Only then does the detailed handwork begin: refining the twisted form, completing its engraving and personal details, and applying the final finish. Each ring is made to order over 4 to 6 weeks.

What is the hidden gemstone in Wunden?

Wunden can hold a hidden gemstone beneath the signet face, set into the underside of the ring where it is close to the skin. This hidden gemstone signet ring keeps the stone private, seen by you rather than the world. You choose it. That knowledge stays between you and the ring.

The stone is selected during the ordering process. Choose from diamond, blue sapphire, ruby, green tsavorite, pink sapphire, orange sapphire, yellow sapphire, amethyst, black diamond or cognac diamond. Other stones are available on request.

Some choose a birthstone, others choose a favourite colour, and some choose a stone that marks a particular moment. Andrew's only advice: choose the one that means something.

This is one of the things most interesting about jewellery: it does not have to be about what other people see. A stone chosen privately, worn daily, known only to the wearer. Or shared with one person. A kind of inscription only you can read.

Wunden can hold a gemstone beneath the signet face, resting near or against the skin and known only to you.

During ordering, choose from ten stones: diamond, blue sapphire, ruby, tsavorite, pink sapphire, orange sapphire, yellow sapphire, amethyst, black diamond or cognac diamond. Other stones are available on request.

A Rune is optional. The signet face can carry two hand-engraved initials, stay completely blank, or wait for a mark at a later point. Wunden works as an engraved signet ring, a quiet blank signet, or a personal piece with a hidden stone.

Is Wunden a men's or women's ring?

Both. Wunden was designed as a unisex signet ring and is available in two proportions. Wunden I offers a lighter profile; Wunden II has greater depth and presence. Either can be ordered in sizes H to Z, so the choice is based on the hand and the feeling you prefer — not gender.

Can Wunden be sized?

Yes. Wunden is available in ring sizes H to Z. Andrew designed a sizing strip into the back of the ring, where the twisted profiles gradually straighten towards the base. This allows careful resizing without distorting the main twisted form or signet profile.

Will it be hallmarked?

Yes. Every Wunden ring is hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office before it leaves the studio. Hallmarking verifies the precious metal content, including 925 silver, 18ct gold, or platinum, and gives the finished ring an independent British quality mark for long-term confidence.

How long does a Wunden take to make?

Andrew makes each Wunden to order. The usual lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery, depending on the chosen mark, metal, and hidden stone. This is not a stock piece. It is made once, to your specification.
