You would think that when approaching twenty years in business, I must be showing signs of apathy or desire for a change. I can hand on heart tell you that this is simply not the case. In fact, totally the opposite! I am enjoying business more than ever and my creativity seems to be equally stimulated and inspired. I am aware of a shift though which is in itself creating a very exciting development with the AG collection.
My first few years of business and my stint at university was all about going against the grain if you will. Coming up with totally new and potentially avant garde designs. This was indeed one way of getting noticed and you can carve a very distinct niche for yourself. I wouldn’t say that I disregarded the classic or traditional ring design, but I arrongantly thought I could do better. This fuelled my ambition to create fresh and exciting collections.
During recent years and especially 2012/13 my perspective has changed dramatically. Instead of an almost rebellious attitude towards the classics, I feel myself drawn to study them and understand the reason why they are classics. This has been an incredibly educational and humbling process. I have a new found respect and delight for well executed classic designs especially Halos and Clusters. The reasoning behind the form of some of these pieces is genius and I am in no doubt why these pieces are hugely popular and indeed timeless.
So how has this inspired me with my designing? This will be evident when we launch the first of our ‘New’ ring designs – Cannelé. But rest assured you will see a drastically different approach – lighter, finer and utilising exquisite setting techniques. In no way am I saying these designs are better than my existing collection, just different, and for those of you who have classic leanings I know you will be smitten.
I would like to end this blog with the realisation that one should avoid thinking one knows it all. Because the second you do, you stop learning. And the second you don’t, you are open to limitless creativity.
Andy.
