Introduction - The Art of Personalised Design
When you do something often enough, you begin to develop an instinct for it - so much so that it becomes second nature. I wouldn’t claim to be a master, but when a client approaches me for a piece of jewelry, I have this knack for really understanding them and crafting a piece that feels uniquely theirs - whether it’s a designer engagement ring or an art deco brooch.
Since engagement rings styles are my main niche, this blog will focus on that realm. We’ll dive into the process and explore why it profoundly impacts the client, the jewelry, and even me as the designer.
Understanding the Client - It’s More Than Just Preferences
I tend to categorize my engagement ring clients into two groups:
- The Surpriser: The client purchasing a ring as a surprise for their partner.
- The Wearer: The client selecting a ring for themselves.
Although the consultation process varies between these types, the goal remains the same - I strive to gain a deep insight into the wearer’s character, tastes, lifestyle, and values. I also want to understand the "why" behind the ring - its true symbolism for the couple, beyond the expected social narrative.
This can be quite complex. Some clients struggle to articulate the details I need, especially when the surpriser is trying to understand their partner’s taste and style. Some know exactly what they want, while others are completely unsure. That’s why the consultation is such a vital and investigative part of the process.
The Consultation - Or Is It Just a 'Chat'?
I always come prepared with a set of questions for our consultation, which is usually held online. These cover basic details like finger size, metal preference, diamond shape unless coloured gemstones are preferred - and let’s not forget their thoughts on wedding bands. If I’m working with a surpriser, I also ask for photographs of their partner and their current jewelry collection. I’ve found that clients often have a few non-negotiable must-haves for their bespoke engagement ring.
Once the housekeeping is done, the conversation takes on a life of its own as we grow more comfortable with each other. I aim to make my clients as natural and authentic as possible - a skill I’ve honed over time. It’s a bit like playing the yes-no game with my family, where you are not allowed to say "yes" or "no."
The trick is to get your conversation partner so engrossed in a topic that they forget the rules. Before long, the yeses and nos come! And this is what happens with my client - we get so into our conversation that their responses are honest and authentic - and this is when the magic starts to happen.

The Magical Forming of the Ring
Perhaps it’s a shared experience among engagement ring designers - I can’t be sure, as I’ve never asked - but what always happens for me is that as our conversation flows, the design begins to take shape in my mind. Every response and discussion point adds (or subtracts) a piece to the puzzle of the ring’s design. This is obvious when a client says, "I only want a brilliant cut diamond!" Yet it’s the more nuanced remarks - like "I’m a sensitive and shy soul at heart" or "I can’t describe how much I love my partner" - that serve as deep inspiration.
I absorb everything, both the obvious and the subtle. My creative process runs effortlessly during our chat, fitting together like jigsaw pieces until concepts come together beautifully. If one idea stands out strongly, I know it is one for me to focus on and share with the client when the time is right. And while there are rare times when the concept doesn’t resonate with the client, more often than not, it hits the mark.
Refining the Vision - From Concept to Detail
After our chat, the process becomes an exciting back-and-forth of concept sketches, questions, videos of diamonds and gemstones, animations of the emerging design, and even resin samples of the ring in progress. Although a unique engagement ring is a relatively small piece, the level of detail involved is astonishing - and this is before any precious metal or gemstones have been touched! The very nature of a bespoke engagement ring sets the stage for an in-depth, micro-level study. This high level of detail and open sharing, in my experience, is warmly received and builds anticipation for the big reveal.

As a designer, I always keep in mind the deep significance an engagement ring holds for a couple. Even though I spend my days immersed in clients, precious metals, and gems, I never lose sight of how personal and meaningful each ring is. The magic isn’t just in the aesthetics or the stones - it’s in the emotional weight they carry. After designing hundreds of engagement rings and creating a large engagement ring collection, I’ve learned that while grandeur and craftsmanship matter, it’s often the smallest touches that make the greatest impact. A heartfelt engraving, a hidden detail, or a subtle nod to the wearer’s personality can evoke a profound reaction. Ultimately, a truly perfect engagement ring isn’t just one that looks beautiful - it’s one that feels destined for the person wearing it.

Conclusion - Crafting More Than Jewelry
Designing an engagement ring is far more than simply creating a piece of jewelry - it’s about representing the most intense and profound relationship one will ever experience. Through understanding, genuine conversation, and what I can only describe as the magic of creative design, each ring becomes a micro sculpture - a wonderful artistic expression of love, as experienced and articulated by the couple in question.
Whether you’re the surpriser or the wearer, remember that the perfect ring is not merely about aesthetics; it’s about the journey, the emotions, and the unforgettable moments that shape us. Here’s to celebrating the art of personalized design and the beautiful stories it tells.
