ENGAGEMENT RINGS YELLOW GOLD: MAKING A COME BACK AND FOR GOOD REASON - Andrew Geoghegan

ENGAGEMENT RINGS YELLOW GOLD: MAKING A COME BACK AND FOR GOOD REASON

At the turn of this century white metal engagement rings were everywhere. Platinum was the buzz metal and white gold was well priced and being used accordingly! At that time and still to this day white metals are described as ‘pure’ and ‘bright’ and said to work perfectly with white diamonds. I am not going to disagree with this but there comes a time when in the world of engagement rings it’s time for a change! One classic option making a welcome and triumphant comeback is yellow gold. Known for its timeless elegance, yellow gold engagement rings are now stealing the spotlight once again, and for good reason.

With a warm and rich orangey hue, yellow gold captures the essence of romance and tradition but also the fact that mined gold is naturally yellow means we generally have a deeper connection with this precious metal and what it symbolises. It’s fair to say that its vibrant color and achievable polish bring an undeniable charm to any ring be it a unique engagement ring or an opulent cocktail ring! Whether paired with a blinding diamond or a precious gemstone such as a velvetty sapphire, yellow gold creates a stunning contrast that instantly catches the eye. It is important to mention that yellow gold doesn’t suit all gemstones – I can’t say I am huge fan of pink sapphires in yellow gold for example!

But it’s not just about the visual – engagement rings yellow gold offer more than just beauty; they are also durable and long-lasting especially when a certain karat is used. Yellow gold is less prone to scratching and tarnishing, making it a practical choice for everyday wear. It’s important to add that it is also a firm favourite of many jewellery workshops becuase it is hard but maleable – perfect for stone setting! And it doesnt require Rhodium plating like most 18ct white golds.

Yellow gold’s versatility stretches even further – it complements a wide variety of skin tones, making it a favorite among many brides-to-be. So, if you’re in search of an engagement ring that exudes romance, elegance, and durability, yellow gold may just be the perfect choice.

THE FIRST TIME I USED YELLOW GOLD

As a jewellery designer, I have the privilege of working with various metals throughout my career although I would say my focus now is more on design. Using yellow gold for the first time was strangely memorable and it left a lasting impression on me.

It was highlighted by the fact that I had only worked with base metals and silver up to this point – so yellow gold was held in high reverence. I saw it as such a precious and treasuable metal – almost nervous to cut and file it! When I finally plucked up the courage to work it, I remember sweeping up every small grain and clipping with a small brush and placing it carefully in a special container! Careful not to waste or lose any! The potential hardness I could achieve with yellow gold inspired me and it was the start of my transition into precious metals. Initially in combination with silver but then all on its own!

As time passed, yellow gold became a staple in my designs. I have witnessed firsthand the joy it brings to my clients when they see their engagement rings come to life.

ARE YELLOW GOLD ENGAGEMENT RINGS RIGHT FOR YOU?

While yellow gold engagement rings have many advantages, it’s important to consider if they are the right choice for you. Here are a few factors to consider:

1. Personal Style: Yellow gold has a distinct look that may not appeal to everyone. If you prefer a more minimalist or modern aesthetic, yellow gold may not be the best fit for you. However, if you appreciate a classic and timeless feel, yellow gold could be the perfect match.

2. Skin Tone: Yellow gold complements a wide range of skin tones, but it tends to look especially flattering on warmer skin tones. If you have a cool or neutral skin tone, you may want to try on different yellow gold rings to see how they look against your skin.

3. Lifestyle: Consider your lifestyle and how you will be wearing your engagement ring. Yellow gold is durable and long-lasting, but it may require more maintenance than platinum for example which is harder wearing. If you lead an active lifestyle or work with your hands and know that you just wont take it off, you may want to consider a metal that is super resistant to scratches and tarnishing.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preference. Take the time to try on different metals and styles to see what resonates with you. Your engagement ring should be a reflection of your love story and individuality and you will know when you have made the right choice.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER METAL OPTIONS FOR ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND CAN YOU MIX METALS?

While yellow gold has its unique charm, there are other metal options to consider for your engagement ring. Here are a few popular choices:

1. Platinum: Platinum is a white metal that is known for its durability and purity – it is 95% pure usually. It offers a sleek and contemporary look that complements pretty much most gemstones. Platinum engagement rings have reached a super high popularity and another advantage is the fact that the metal is dense giving the ring a very tangible sense of weight and this value..

2. White Gold: White gold is an alloy of yellow gold and other white metals such as silver and palladium usually. It offers a similar look to platinum but is not quite as hard and at the point of writing this post, 18ct white gold is actually more expensive than platinum. It usually requires rhodium plating to get a bright white finish which needs reapplying when worn. White gold engagement rings are versatile and, like platinum can be paired with a variety of gemstones. To read about Platinum Vs White Gold, read this blog post.

3. Rose Gold: Rose gold has gained popularity in recent years for its romantic and feminine appeal. It is in part created by mixing yellow gold with copper, giving it a warm and rosy hue. Rose gold engagement rings can add a touch of vintage charm and are perfect for those who want something unique. I find it works exceptionally well with red, pink and green gemstones.

Mixing metals in engagement rings was popular when I was studying jewellery design in the 90s and perhaps is showing a little of a resurgence at the time this post is being written. A word of caution – avoid making your ring too complicated. That is not to say do not mix metals, just be sure that the look will last the test of time and styles. In the hands of a good designer, a mix of metals can really set your ring apart and all for the right reasons!

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, yellow gold engagement rings are making a comeback for good reason. With their timeless elegance, durability, and versatility, they offer a perfect blend of beauty and practicality. Whether you appreciate classic designs or want to make a statement with a unique engagement ring, yellow gold certainly has something to offer and this is emphasised with our ancient affinity for the yellowy metal!
