Mike came to me through a recommendation and wanted to propose to his girlfriend Katie. I hope Mike doesn’t mind me saying that he was naturally a little nervous as he was new to this and wanted to get the ‘right ring’! He shared with me some images of rings that had perhaps been subtly suggested and they were of classic pear shaped diamond rings – claw set. As an engagement ring designer I want my clients to feel like they have something of real value, rarity and individuality so I suggested the possibility of creating a bespoke engagement ring although using the classic style as inspiration. This would be in part how I designed the setting and also including some delightful ‘hidden’ diamonds. The promise of a truly unique engagement ring seemed to be what Mike wanted to hear and I forged on with my design process.
Designing traditional and classic styles of engagement rings is not what I usually do but I love the challenge, partly because so many iterations have gone before. So on this occasion I really needed to be tap into my inspiration. For some reason, the design that first comes to me is usually the one that I finish on! It is like I intuitively know straight away what the ring must look like. This I believe comes from experience but also from requesting information about Katie such as what is her style, what car does she drive, what brands does she like – I start to form an understanding of what she loves and what she doesn’t!.
The resulting ring is spectacular with talon claws and a wonderful waving motif of secret diamond – and thankfully totally loved by both Katie and Mike.
I am so delighted with this new design that I intend to use it as an inspiration for a new collection! Keep watching this space!
