Buying an engagement ring can feel like stepping into a world you know absolutely nothing about — a bit like being dropped into the cockpit of a fighter jet and told to take off. As someone who’s worked with hundreds of men about to propose, I’ve seen the full range of emotions — excitement, fear, overthinking, underthinking… it’s all part of the ride.
Here are ten important questions I’m often asked (and some they think but don’t ask) — along with a bit of guidance, so you don’t have to stumble through it alone.
1. How do I know what style she’ll like?
Ah yes, the million-pound question. Short answer: pay attention! Look at the jewellery she already wears. Ask her friends or family (if they can keep a secret!). Or ask me — send me photos and tell me about your partner’s loves, likes, dislikes and style – and I will work my magic. I have created countless diamond rings in this way and it is a wonderful process with an incredible result.
In this insta reel I give some light hearted but valuable advice about style choice.
2. Do I have to get a diamond?
Absolutely not. Diamonds are apparently timeless, yes — but there are a myriad of other gemstones available such as sapphires, rubies, spinels, for example. These can add a rich colour and more individuality. As lab grown VS natural diamonds saga continues with the resulting turbulent prices, coloured gemstones are becoming a choice of many. The real question is: what would make her heart stop?

3. How much should I spend?
Forget the ‘three months’ salary’ nonsense. Spend what you’re comfortable with — but also recognise that this is a forever piece and your partner may have certain expectations! Go hard on the meaning and sentiment — symbolic, beautifully crafted, and designed for beauty and durability.

4. What if I get the size wrong?
This happens all the time. Don’t worry. Most rings can be resized, and I’ll guide you through clever ways to guesstimate her size (without ruining the surprise).
5. Is lab-grown better than natural?
Depends what matters to you both. Lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds are physically the same. The difference lies in ethics, price, and perception. It can also very much depend on your partner’s own opinion on lab-grown and mined diamonds. At the writing of this post, natural diamonds are becoming more and more affordable and labs are very affordable!
6. How long will it take to make?
If you’re buying from my collection, the lead time is usually a few weeks. Bespoke pieces take longer due to the design time involved. Express engagement rings can be created by my brand and many others for those who leave it a little late! My advice — don’t! Leave ample time to make the process enjoyable for all involved.
7. Should I propose with the ring, or let her choose it?
You know your partner. Some want the full surprise. Others would prefer a say in the final design. I’ve done it both ways — including making temporary ‘proposal rings’ to buy you time. By engaging with a jeweller when buying and going through the design process methodically, this can be a super way to ensure the design is perfect for her – and making the effort like this goes a long way.

8. Is it bad if I don’t know what a carat is?
Not at all. Most men don’t — and it’s my job to translate the jargon. The good news? Bigger isn’t always better. It’s about proportion, cut, and what looks great on your partner’s finger.
9. What if I don’t want something traditional?
Perfect. Neither do I – although I have a healthy respect for the classics. Whether it’s a twist on a traditional ring or something wild and bold, I design rings that reflect the person — not the cliché.

10. How do I actually start this process without feeling like an idiot?
If you want to engage me – it's easy. Drop me a message. No pressure. No sales pitch. Just a chat. I’ve helped men at every stage — from ‘I think I want to propose in the next year’ to ‘I’m doing it next Tuesday and I have no clue.’
If you're looking for the questions to ask your jeweller, want to understand the pros and cons of lab-grown diamonds, or just need some clarity on how to buy a diamond ring, don’t be afraid to reach out. Your jeweller when buying is your guide, sounding board, and co-conspirator. And if you're lucky, maybe even your proposal wingman.
